With #YouShape month now well underway Groups throughout East Lancashire have been taking part in a wide range of activities all working towards becoming a more youth-shaped movement.
This week I caught up with the District Youth Commissioner for Blackburn, Jack Murray. In Blackburn, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been taking part in #YouShape but I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Executive Committee members also got in on the action by signing their own #YouShape pledge at a workshop for local Trustees.
As well as gathering great program ideas from young people that leaders can embrace and look forward to planning, many Groups and sections around the County have also taken to the ‘Wear Their Necker’ initiative to show young people what it’s really like being a leader!
From talking to Jack about his visits to many Groups across Blackburn, I was happy to learn that many young people throughout all the Sections that Jack visited achieved their #YouShape Silver Pledge Certificate showing that Scouts in Blackburn are getting stuck into their adventure and that their leaders are committed to working directly in partnership with young people to help them make better decisions to provide skills for life in their area.
Jack told me that it “has been great seeing groups embracing the true spirit of #YouShape” but we are not at the end just yet! While #YouShape month is one time in the year when we focus on promoting the idea of youth-shaped Scouting, it’s actually a concept that is embedded into our everyday lives in Scouting – something that BP started over 100 years ago!
