Scouts from Lancashire are hiking to the Moon for The Big Night.
By means of a sponsored walk at home the Lancashire Scouts are tackling The Great Indoors Hike to the Moon by walking one mile each whilst in lockdown. Walking laps of the sofa, lengths of their bedroom or the width of their back garden Scouts will collectively cover the mammoth 240,000 miles that it would take them to get to the Earth’s moon.
Scouts from Clitheroe, hiked around their garden, while Blackburn Scouts ran up and down the stairs and waded through makeshift rivers avoiding crocodiles – you may have spotted them on BBC Breakfast!
Chief Scout Bear Grylls says: “This is a chance to show the amazing power of our movement working together for The Big Night In. It’s our chance to help other people, use our skills, step up and play our part. So let’s get started and I’ll see you on the moon!”
Chris Taylor, a Scout Leader from East Lancashire Scouts said “Supporting our local community in its time of need is so important. As Scouts we’ve been sharing activity ideas through #TheGreatIndoors to help families locally and by playing our part in Hike to the Moon we will be helping heroes across the UK”
Robert Mason, a 17 year old Scout from Rossendale said “I’ve had so much fun doing my hike to the moon challenge – so far I’ve managed to do over 12,000 steps and it’s a great opportunity to do some exercise too!”
11 of the 12 people who have walked on the Moon were Scouts, including Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin; so this is a return to the Moon for the Scouts.
