Skills and Chills 2009: 19th - 21st June 2009

  • When is it?
Friday 19th – Sunday 21st June 2009

  • Where is it?
Bowley Scout Camp

  • How much does it cost?
£20 plus food (see below for options) – no increase on last year’s prices!

  • What is it?
A balanced programme for adults. An opportunity for Leaders to meet new friends from across Districts and Sections within the County, to get together with like-minded people, learn new skills, share ideas, problems and solutions in a relaxed social environment, participate in a range of activities, complete your annual ongoing learning…and have some fun (without having the responsibility of looking after young people!)

  • Why is Skills & Chills different?
It’s your event, the key is knowledge sharing, there are no “us and them” or “staff and participants”…we’re all in this together! It would be really good if everyone was willing to bring along their favourite craft, skill or activity, to demonstrate it at some point during the weekend and encourage others to have a go – however this is not compulsory!

  • Have you tried it before?
Yes, last year was the first event of this type in East Lancashire, it was hugely popular and people have asked for it to be repeated!

  • What do I get for my £20?
Fresh air and green grass, a camping pitch and access to the site amenities.

A range of day time activities (probably) including…Shooting, Climbing, Wood Carving, Circus Skills, Backwoods Cooking, Various Crafts, Archery, Sports, Games, Survival Skills, Rafting, plus whatever else you would like to do or provide… (see application form)

Nocturnal activities (probably) including…Live music, Campfire, Disco, Quiz…marinated with a glass of wine or a can of beer for Adults (not included – bring your own supplies!)

  • Young Leaders
Please remember that as a Young Leader you have agreed to adhere to the Code of Behaviour that includes not drinking alcohol on Scouting activities. Anyone suspected of breaking this code of behaviour will be instructed to leave the site immediately.

  • Who can apply and how?
All adults involved in Scouting (including Network) plus Young Leaders.(You can also bring your dependent children, for which there will be no charge unless they want feeding, if you can’t find a babysitter, but on this occasion the focus of the event and the priority for the activities is firmly Adults and Young Leaders! That’s not to say we won’t experiment with some random young people as we try out our new found skills! Complete the application form attached as soon as possible and return it to Glen Fendall, c/o East Lancs County Scout Office, Bowley Scout Campsite, Dean Lane, Great Harwood, Blackburn BB6 7UN.

  • Food...
You really have three options regarding food:
  • Option A
Don't eat.
  • Option B
Spend a couple of evenings before Skills & Chills going shopping for food, collecting cooking equipment and gas from Scout Groups. Upon arrival at site, have all the hassle of unloading said equipment and food, and carrying it all from the carpark to the campsite. During the weekend wasting valuable activity and partying time, preparing, cooking, washing up etc. And finally at the end of the weekend lugging it all back to the cars, and then spending a couple of hours taking it back to Scout Groups.
  • Option C
Pay just £12 for a “Leaders Lodge” meal ticket which entitles you to 4 meals up to the value of £3 each, two breakfasts up to the value of £2.50, and unlimited Tea/Coffee and squash all weekend in the exquisite surroundings of the Leaders Lodge. You can also purchase food over the counter during the weekend.

  • What do I bring?
Yourself, and all your fellow Leaders (or prospective Leaders!)Tent (optional - depends on how serious you want to party!)Sleeping Bag (as above)Wash Kit (please!)Torch (unless you want to get lost in the dark!)Uniform (if you have one) and other clothing for the weekendPocket money for the sweet shop (and extra’s from the Leaders Lodge)Protection (suncream, raincoat, insect repellent, ...)Optionally cooking equipment, but the onsite catering comes highly recommended!Camera (for the moments you won’t remember unless you have evidence)An activity, skill or craft, plus equipment required (optional)Sense of humour, a taste for adventure and a sprinkling of enthusiasm
